BELGIAN SCHOOLS

You should be aware of the language arrangements in Belgium!
In the Brussels Capital region, the language of education is Dutch or French, depending on the parents' choice. In the communes around Brussels, the legislation is different. We would therefore advise you to contact the Ministry for National Education (pre-school and primary section) for more details before you register your child.

Three types

  • Official education organised by the State (free).

  • Catholic-education, subsidised (free).

  • Private education, not subsidised by the State (far less common than the other two types).

The system

  • Nursery school - from the age of 2 1/2; Not compulsory, but recommended by education experts. This is not a kindergarten, but active preparation for primary school.

  • Primary school - from the age of 6 to 12 (a child is supposed to reach his sixth. birthday in the course of the calendar year in which he starts primary school). A cycle of 6 years.

  • Secondary school - from the age of 12 to 18. There are 4 options: general, technical, artistic secondary and professional secondary.

EQUIVALENCE RATING OF DEGREE QUALIFICATIONS

Every case is judged on its merits. Applications may be lodged either by the applicant or by the administration in the educational establishment where the foreign student is registered. The 'equivalence' units at the education authorities will explain to you how to complete the formalities.
Note

  • All the documents in the application for equivalence rating must be accompanied by a translation made either by a certified translator or by the services at the Belgian embassy or consulate in the countries concerned, except for those written in German, English, Spanish, Italian, French and Dutch.
  • Certificates of completion of secondary studies issued by Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco and the Netherlands give the holder automatic access to certain elements in the Belgian higher education system.
  • The 'ratification commission' is also entitled to require foreign students to sit examinations. These students must always provide evidence that they have reached a certain standard in their own country to be admitted to follow, at equivalent levels, options offered to them under the Belgian education system.
